ABOUT THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS

When you play in the 2009 McGladrey Team Championship you are also supporting Special Olympics, providing opportunities for children and adults with intellectual disabilities to participate in the sport of golf.

About Special Olympics

Special Olympics is an international organization that changes lives by promoting understanding, acceptance and inclusion among people with and without intellectual disabilities. Through year-round sports training and athletic competition and other related programming for 2.8 million children and adults with intellectual disabilities in 180 countries, Special Olympics has created a model community that celebrates people’s diverse gifts. Founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Special Olympics provides people with intellectual disabilities continuing opportunities to realize their potential, develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy and friendship. Visit Special Olympics at www.specialolympics.org.

Special Olympics is the official charity of The McGladrey Team Championship. In 2009 this new partnership will support Special Olympics athletes by providing both financial support and opportunities for athletes to enhance their golf experience by participating in certain McGladrey Team Championship events throughout the country.

The McGladrey Team Championship will donate $2 from every Local Qualifying Event entry fee to Special Olympics. Fundraising efforts also will be conducted at Local Qualifying Events nationwide, as well as at the 41 Section Championships and the National Championship. In addition, RSM McGladrey will provide Special Olympics athletes the opportunity to participate as golfers and Global Messengers, speaking on behalf of Special Olympics at McGladrey Team events.

The Special Olympics Golf program is centered on two educational phases designed to encompass all skill levels: learning to swing a golf club and learning to play the game. Athletes may participate in Skills, 9-hole or 18-hole stroke play. Special Olympics athletes can also participate in Unified Sports® Golf Team Play. Special Olympics Unified Sports is a program that combines Special Olympics athletes and athletes without intellectual disabilities (partners) on sports teams for training and competition. Golf was introduced as an official Special Olympics sport in 1995. Today approximately 14,000 Special Olympics athletes have chosen to play golf.

“The McGladrey Team Championship will offer our athletes the opportunity to enhance their Special Olympics participation and play golf alongside members of their communities as well as with some of the best athletes in the country,” said Bob Gobrecht, Managing Director of Special Olympics North America. “In addition to this being an incredibly exciting opportunity for our athletes, Special Olympics is grateful for the support of RSM McGladrey and for the ongoing relationship with The PGA of America.”
